Working For Sleepy's - The Offer Letter and First Day

10/13/2008
Well I was excited to start my new career with Sleepy's. I was a manager for Sprint and after 10 years I was lured into Sleepy's with the title of District Manager. I was trying to become a District Manager at Sprint for years and never got a shot, so when someone gave me the shot I had to take it. So after 2 interviews (One with Kim L. (HR) and one with Jeff G. (Regional Manager)) I was extended an offer of employment. I was told that it was a 40-42 hr work week and my pay was 52,000/yr plus commission on my stores. This sounded perfect, so after a family meeting I made the decision to accept the offer. I went to work at Sprint the next day, gave my two weeks notice and was ready to start my new career.

I can remember this Monday like it was yesterday. I woke up at 4am because I had to drive to Enfield CT for my training class at 9am. I would stay up there until Friday and go back on Monday. I got up there no problem and spend 5 quality weeks learning the "Sleepy's" way.
This was a very unique course taught by one of the best trainers I have ever had. I the trainer Mike spent the time teaching us the ordering system and how to sell. I should have known that this business was for the soulless when they devoted many days on how to navigate the customer away from the advertised bed they came in for (you know that $299 queen set you always see advertised) and sell them something more expensive. I am not going to get into how they do it, but just be aware what is happening when you come in for something cheap and before you see it the salesperson starts you off on a $2000+ bed.
I know that a salesperson should learn how to do this but they should stress consultative selling rather than step-up-down selling. Well I got through the class, passed the final exam (yes there was one) and full of Kool-Aid I was read to lead my stores.

Working for Sleepy's - The New Hire Propaganda

Well this video is where it all starts. You are interested in the company and you watch this video. Yes they do have someone say that he "makes as much as doctors and lawyers" on this video. I know who that is and I am willing to bet that today he is barely close to half of what a doctors nurse makes. Anyway I regress. Please take a moment and watch the video. Once you do this the things you will read in future blogs will shed light on how funny this video is.

On a side note I believe that this type of propaganda video would make even Joseph Goebbels proud.
